In the ongoing debate of legislative issues, health care reform is getting a lot of press, but other important legislation is still moving through the chambers of Congress. H.R. 2749, otherwise known as the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, passed in the House on July 29, 2009... states that small businesses, organic production practices, wildlife habitats, and conservation efforts should be taken into consideration when developing the rules; however, I worry about who will lobby the FDA while the rules are being developed and finalized.
Bill Martin's background is in anthropology and environmental consulting, so he has been concerned with how and why food is produced for a long time.
Visitors can come out just to see the farm, do some work, or buy anything of the fresh harvest.

The carrot guy or the "carrot king," whatever you want to call him, Gary Guthrie knows carrots. He actually knows a lot about growing fruits and vegetables in central Iowa as the owner of Growing Harmony Farm, a community supported agriculture (CSA) style farm just southeast of Ames.
Onion Creek Farm is nestled among hills and trees just north of Ames, IA. Owners Joe Lynch and Lonna Nachtigal do most of the work by hand and describe their plot of land as a “big garden.”
Recently, I was asked if I'd be interested in writing a column about food and Iowa and if I had an angle in mind. I didn't even need a minute to think about it – local food producers and the entire food infrastructure.
